Is teamLab Planets Tokyo closing in 2027?
Updated October 27, 2026
Quick answer
Yes, on current plans. The official teamLab page gives the museum's term as "July 7, 2018 – End of 2027" (checked 27 October 2026). teamLab has not published an exact final day, and it has not announced any change to that end date.
teamLab Planets has always had a fixed term, and it has been extended three times. The last end date before this one was the end of 2023; in late summer 2023 the run was extended to the end of 2027 (Time Out Tokyo, 8 September 2023). Until teamLab says otherwise, plan on the museum being open until late 2027 and gone after it.
The announced end date
The "General Information" block on teamLab's official page lists the term as July 7, 2018 to the end of 2027. That is the only end date teamLab publishes. It gives no final day, so "end of 2027" should be read as the last weeks of 2027, not as a confirmed 31 December. The page also lists normal opening hours, 08:00 to 22:00, and two maintenance closures in late 2026 (5 November and 3 December), so the museum is running a full schedule meanwhile.
Why it was extended
This is the third extension. When it opened on 7 July 2018, the run was set to end in 2020; it was extended to the end of 2022, then, in September 2022, to the end of 2023 (Wikipedia, citing teamLab's announcements). In 2023 teamLab announced it would stay open until the end of 2027; Time Out Tokyo's Japanese edition reported the extension on 8 September 2023 alongside new works. teamLab has not given a detailed reason, but it has kept investing: a new area with over 20 works, the Athletics Forest among them, opened on 22 January 2025 (Wikipedia). The context is demand: the museum welcomed about 2.51 million visitors in 2025 (teamLab, from official ticket data) and holds a Guinness World Record for the most-visited museum dedicated to a single group or artist (reported by Business Insider). Whether it will be extended again is not known, and we will not guess.
Booking near the end
If your trip is in 2026 or the first half of 2027, the end date does not affect you: book as normal. For late 2027, three things are worth knowing. Official tickets cannot be refunded, only moved up to three times, so a date you buy cannot be cashed in if plans change. teamLab does not publish how far ahead tickets go on sale, so final-month dates may appear later than you expect. And last chances draw crowds, so book the moment your date shows on the official Ticket Store or a booking partner. Check the official page again shortly before you travel; if the date moves, it will be announced there first.
If you miss it
teamLab's other Tokyo museum, teamLab Borderless at Azabudai Hills, has been open since 9 February 2024 and is listed by teamLab as permanent. It is a different experience, a set of rooms you wander rather than a barefoot route through water, but it is the closest alternative in the city. Our comparison of teamLab Planets vs Borderless sets them side by side, and the teamLab Planets tickets page compares every way to book Planets while it is open.
