When is the best time to visit teamLab Planets?
Updated October 27, 2026
Quick answer
A weekday that is not a Japanese public holiday, in either the first slots after the 08:00 opening or the evening before last entry at 21:00, is the best bet. teamLab publishes no crowd data, so this follows from what is published: weekends and holidays add domestic visitors, and the official notes warn of 30 to 60 minute entry queues at busy times.
An evening slot has one extra pull: the outdoor Moss Garden changes after sunset, when its ovoids glow, and Tokyo's sunset ranges from about 16:28 in December to about 18:57 in June and July. Book a slot that leaves you in the garden after that time.
The quietest days
Nobody outside the museum can see its daily visitor numbers, and teamLab does not publish them, so treat any claim of a guaranteed quiet day with caution. What is safe to say: about 2.51 million people visited in 2025 (teamLab), and Japan's weekends and public holidays bring domestic visitors on top of the international ones. A midweek day in an ordinary week is your best chance of a shorter queue. Note the closures: the official page lists Thursday 5 November and Thursday 3 December 2026 as closed days.
The quietest time slots
The museum opens at 08:00, closes at 22:00 and takes last entry at 21:00 (official, checked 27 October 2026). The first slots of the morning and the last ones of the evening sit outside the peak hours when tour groups and day-trippers arrive. One of the 10 latest reviews of the GetYourGuide entry ticket says the line moved quickly at 18:00; another recommends the ¥12,000 (about $76) Premium Pass, with priority entry, to skip large queues. Book the specific half-hour you want: entry is timed.
Weekday vs weekend
Choose a weekday if you can. The adult Entrance Pass is dynamically priced from ¥3,800 (about $24), so a busy weekend slot can also cost more than a quiet weekday one; the Ticket Store shows the price for each slot before you pay. If a weekend is your only option, go at opening time or after 19:00, and book as early as possible.
Holidays to avoid
Japan's national holidays for the rest of 2026 are Culture Day (3 November) and Labour Thanksgiving Day (23 November); in 2027 they start with New Year's Day (1 January) and Coming of Age Day (11 January), and the spring cluster known as Golden Week runs from Shōwa Day on 29 April to Children's Day on 5 May (Nager.Date public holiday data). On 31 December the museum closes early, at 20:00.
Seasonal artworks
Some works follow the year. teamLab says the flowers in Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People change with the seasons, and Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers shows "a seasonal year of flowers". The Floating Flower Garden is filled with living orchids. Outside, the Moss Garden stays open in light rain but cannot be viewed in typhoon-level wind or heavy rain, which is a point for avoiding stormy days in September, Tokyo's wettest month at about 204 mm of rain (Open-Meteo climate normals). Inside, the weather does not matter.
Frequently asked questions
Is teamLab Planets better during the day or at night?
The indoor works look the same at any hour. The outdoor Moss Garden is different after sunset, when the ovoids glow, so an evening slot gets you both versions if you arrive before dark.
Is teamLab Planets crowded?
It is one of Tokyo's busiest museums, with about 2.51 million visitors in 2025 (teamLab). Timed entry spreads people out, but the official notes still warn of 30 to 60 minute queues at busy times.
Is teamLab Planets open when it rains?
Yes. Nearly everything is indoors. Only the outdoor Moss Garden closes, and only in typhoon-level wind or heavy rain.
What time does teamLab Planets open?
08:00 every day, with closing at 22:00 and last entry at 21:00 (31 December: until 20:00). See the full opening hours.
